10 Weeks

How your baby's growing:Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature. He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy. If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.In other developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches.

What do I want to eat...the million $ question

I am normally the most healthy eater you will ever meet (except for my brownie splurge on the weekends). I take my lunch to work and eat sandwiches, tuna, salad, fruit, veggies, etc. My husband and I try to eat out only once or twice a week, and I usually eat fish and veggies when we go out. But for the past 4-5 weeks, all I want to eat are carbs! Chips, bread, pastries, pizza...basically anything starchy. I still get in my banana each morning with cereal, fruit during the day, and an occasional salad, but some days I just cannot stomach them. And because I am normally a big fruit and veggie eater, I feel guilty when I don't get my proper servings in. And now we eat out a lot more! I've made the mistake of going grocery shopping for the week and then I end up throwing away half of what I bought because I don't want it. So now, we plan dinner about an hour before we eat. :)I hope this doesn't continue for the next 6 months. I'm going to drive Ricky crazy!

First Ultrasound - May 20, 2008

Today we went back to the doctor for our first ultrasound. The main reason we had an ultrasound so early was to confirm how far along I was. It was hard for them to go by my monthly cycles because they are nowhere near regular. I had actually calculated the due date based on ovulation date, so I was pretty sure I was 9 weeks.
Well, what do you know! I was 9 weeks exactly. That means we are having a Christmas baby! Our official due date is December 23, 2008. Hopefully we will get lucky and have the baby a few days early so we can be at home on Christmas Day.

First Appointment - May 12, 2008

8 Weeks - Baby is the size of a Kidney Bean

Today was our first visit to the OB/GYN. They took my blood pressure, weighed me (ugh!), and made me pee in a cup. I guess that was to confirm my pregnancy. Of course it was positive so I think Ricky was finally convinced at that point!
Then we went through a complete medical history of our families as well as ourselves. They tried to determine my due date but because my monthly cycles are not at all regular, they had a hard time pinpointing how far along I was. So they scheduled an ultrasound for the following week that would determine how many weeks pregnant I was.
The most exciting part of the appointment was hearing
the baby's heartbeat. It took the nurse a few minutes
to find out and we only heard it for a few seconds,
but it was so cool to hear it. It was beating strong
at a rate of 160.

We're Pregnant! - April 21, 2008

D-Day! This morning I woke up knowing I would take a pregnancy test. I had a doctor's appointment scheduled for the following week (yearly checkup) so I wanted to take the test before I went to the doctor. I really thought my face was breaking out and I was having cramps because it was that "time of the month". Well, I sure was surprised when the pregnancy test came out positive!
Ricky was still asleep so I walked over, tapped him on the shoulder, and showed him the pregnancy test. He sat straight up in the bed and said, "Are you sure?!?" Well, since pregnancy tests are 99% accurate, I was pretty sure.
I actually had a dream the night before that the pregnancy test came back positive. In my dream, a bright red light came on revealing a positive result. My test didn't have a light on it, but 2 pink lines appeared telling me I was pregnant. Ricky also had a dream that I was pregnant which is really odd because he NEVER remembers his dreams.
Now the decision, do we tell anyone or keep it a secret until our first appointment...
